Make Night Photos Uploaded
Thanks to everyone that came to MakeNight#2. Some pretty cools projects people. Things that were made included, four kinds of robots (mini sumo, line follower, drawbot and fire breathing), crocheted hyperbolic coral, origami, guitar distortion pedal, (yummy) cupcakes, a “social” LCD sign and loads of Sugruing. All the photos are up in the gallery now. MakeNight#3 will be in March 31st. It can only get bigger and better
IGNITE Talk Video – Make Yourself Happy
Here is the video of the talk I gave at IGNITE#2 Dublin. I think they edited everything together very nicely and the whole night was a great success. Thanks Conor! Some great talks up on the IGNITE Dublin youtube channel, all only five minutes long, definitely work taking a look at.
Next Make Night is on the 10th of February (when the Science Gallery reopens), so plenty of time to get your materials together for that. Myself, Lukasz, Conor, Jiri and Zdenek will be testing our robot designs for the Robot Challenge competition that night also, so there should be plenty of robots running around as well.
OH and a Merry Christmas to everyone!

VCR Hacking for electronic goodies
Old VCRs are a great places for scavenging components to make robots. They are full of motors, pulleys capacitors and IR stuff. This video shows that with the proper knowledge and marshmallows there is even more to be found
Sit freaky robotic dog! Sit!
This thing is unreal. I think the video explains more than I can say. The whiny noise is a little annoying, but the way it moves is freaky! They call it Big dog, measuring 1 metre long, 0.7 metres tall and weight of 75 kg (but amazingly can carry twice that). Perhaps they were basing it on a Irish wolfhound which seems to have similar dimensions.
It’s made by boston dynamics and like most super advanced robots it has mainly military applications. Imagine a pack of these with stereo vison and an automated machine gun turret chasing you though a forest. Enough to make your pants into a cottage pie making factory pretty quick I’d say.
I, for one welcome our new robotic overlords
We all know that eventually the robots will take over right? Maybe not in Ireland just yet since we can’t even get our electronic voting machines working. New Zealand’s 4th most popular folk parody duo Flight of the conchords know the robot revolution coming though and they are out to corner the market!
Love this video
Better safe than sorry!
Thinking about building robots? Maybe you should consider robot insurance!
