Make Night Now With Added Sugru!
Posted by David in Announcments, Events on February 3rd, 2010
Added what? Added Sugru! The hottest new “making product”. Sugru is a silicone-based adhesive which sets at room temperature. So you can mold it as you like and once set, it will still be slightly flexible. Use it to make/repair/improve all sorts of things. It’s like the blu-Tack on steroids! Want to buy some, well you can’t (for the moment), because they sold all of the first two batches (3,000 packs) in only 16 hours. But all is not lost, the friendly people at Sugru understand the beauty of people coming together and making things and want to help us out. So they are supplying FREE SUGRU for the next “Make Night” (Thursday 11th of Feb in the Science Gallery (6-8pm)). Enough for 15-20 people! So bring along any stuff you think could do with a bit of “sugruing” and be one of the first people to try it out!
It’ll be Sugru “HACKquarium” within a Make Night. I can’t wait!
Upcoming Events: Make Night & Evening of Robots
Posted by David in Announcments, Events on January 15th, 2010

Loads of great events coming up in February! First off there is a “Make Night” in the Science Gallery on Thursday the 11th of February 6pm to 8pm. This is at slightly different time than mentioned in previous posts (as it clashed with Science Gallery re-opening party).
The idea of a “Make Night” is simple – come along to the Science Gallery and make ANYTHING you like, in the company of other “makers” doing the same. Share ideas, materials and tools. Show off you projects and from learn the experience of others. Drink Italian coffee and talk to friendly creative people. Engineers, artists, jam makers, glue and glitter experts are all welcome. Pick a project, get your materials together and join in the fun. Still not clear? Check out the 5 minute ignite talk about them here.
It’s also going to be an Irish Robotics Club meeting, with testing of the robots we are sending to Robot Challenge 2010 in full swing, so watch out for rogue speedy robots at your feet!
Admission free.
The very next day (12th of February) there will be an “Evening of Robots” being held in collaboration with our friends at TOG. This is on in their space on Arran quay. It’s part of a series of events they are running for Engineering Week, which are open to the public. Well worth checking out!
One more thing, world of robots on at BT Young Scientist Exhibition at the moment. Looks like fun!
Speaking at Ignite Dublin #2
I’m presenting at the second ever Ignite Dublin Event to be held in the Science Gallery on the 4th of December from 18:30 – 21:00.
Ignite is like a mini conference with a series of five minutes talks, each with 20 slides (rotated automatically after 15 seconds). It’s fast paced and straight to the point.
I’m going to be talking about making stuff , running the Make nights and setting up the Irish robotics club. The title of the talk tentatively being “Make yourself happy!”
Tickets are on sale from the Science gallery website here, priced at 10 euro.
Make Night – 28th October
Posted by David in Announcments, Events on October 20th, 2009
I’m running a Make Night on the 28th of October 6pm-8pm in the Science Gallery.
So what is a Make Night I hear you ask ? It’s a workshop without the lecture. It’s a friendly meet where people come along and make something. Absolutely anything! Pick a project and bring the materials and tools you need and we’ll provide a space for you to work in. While you are there, draw inspiration from what others are making around you, talk to them (they are nice), ask them questions, learn new things, work together, share tools and ideas. Bring along your works in progress, bring stuff you have already made and show it off!
It’s kinda like arts and craft when you were in school but you’re an adult now and can do better right?…right?
Need inspiration! I point you towards the internet, try one of the thousands of projects on instructables, try the make blog and magazine, try googling your wildest dreams
It’s on just before halloween, so maybe it’s time to make a kick-bum costume or bring along a pumpkin and knife and start carving!
Write a computer program, dabble in electronics, make a robot, learn to knit, invent a board game, make something! You’ll feel good about yourself and become instantly more attractive.
If still have no ideas but still want to make stuff, I’ll have the materials and tools to make Drawbots (created by Jonah Brucker-Cohen).
So if you are an artists looking to work with engineers, or an engineer looking for a creative ideas or just a lost Science Gallery attendee looking for the toilets, you are more than welcome.
It’s FREE by the way. Thanks to Science Gallery for their space and support.
*UPDATE* Michael from Animatazz will be bringing along some easy-action animation figures and plasticine for anyone who wants to try their hands at some stop-motion animation. Fantastic!
TOG Electro-chic Workshop
Fair play to the TOG guys! They are running two electronic fashion workshops in their space on Arran Quay on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th of October from 2pm to 6pm.
The cost is €15 (€12 students/unwaged, €10 TOG members) take part in the workshops, with non-members welcome to participate.
Electroluminescent wire will raw material so whether you want to learn a bit of sewing, get your rave clobber in order or work on that TRON costume for Halloween don’t miss it. Now were did I put my lilypad.
See you there!
Soldering workshop – Burn free
Just a quick post to thank everyone who showed up for the soldering workshop. I enjoyed giving it, so I hope you guys got something out of it. Everyone seemed to get the hang of it by the end and most people had it fully functioning right away or after a bit of tweeking. Good work everyone!
We had two no shows, but if you send me an email with your address (my email is on the about page). I’ll post the kit out to you and you can solder it in your own time.
Irish Robotics Club – First Meeting
Posted by David in Announcments, Events on June 15th, 2009
I’m delighted to annouce that the first meeting of the Irish robotics club will be held on Wednesday 24th of June in the Science Gallery (7-8pm in studio 2). It’s a great location in the centre of town and they are providing us with projectors and all the rest, so a BIG thanks to them.
Since it will be the first meeting I’ll talk a little bit about setting up the club and what sort of activities the club run (talks, workshops, competitions, etc). Then I’ll open it up to discussion to see what people are interested in getting from a robotics club. All suggestions will be very welcome.
Hope to see you all there
Getting to the Science gallery:
Foot: Use the new gateway entrance off Pearse Street opposite The Academy Building, around the corner from Westland Row and Pearse Street station.
Bus: Trinity College is on most of the major bus routes into the city centre: 1, 2, 3, 25, 25a, 26, 27x, 44, 44c, 48a, 49x, 50x, 66, 66a, 67, 67a, 77, 77x . For route details go to Dublin Bus.
Train: DART and suburban train services stop at Pearse Station.
3Dcamp 2009 Talk
I’m giving a talk at 3Dcamp! It’s a themed Barcamp which focuses on … wait for it… 3D stuff.
I’m going to focus on hardware interfacing with 3D environments and I’m tentatively going with the title: ”Wiimote interfacing and how to look stupid while controlling a robot”.
I hope to give an overview of interfacing wiimotes with 3D PC applications such as Google earth and CAD programs, with a little bit of commentary on advantages/disadvantages and alternative physical computing interfaces with emphasis on those from the “maker community”. Followed by a little robotic hardware interface demonstration with wiimotes, camera and video glasses, which is guaranteed to break horribly on the day!
When: Saturday 6th June 2009
Where: Engineering Research Building, University of Limerick
Start & Finish: 10am start, 5pm’ish finish
Topics
- virtual worlds (Second Life, the Metaverse),
- mirror worlds (Google Earth and Virtual Earth),
- 3D modelling (Blender, Sketchup),
- mapping mashups, GPS,
- Location based Services (LBSs),
- haptics and augmented toys (eg. Wiimote hacks),
- ambient intelligence,
- interactive art installations
- …and all things 3D.
I’m also talking at Irish Signals and Systems Conference in UCD on the 10th June 2009. The title for that one is “Proximal Time-Optimal Control of Flexible Systems made Robust though Feedback” . No robots in that one though. And finally in Warsaw at the multibody 2009 conference (29th June – 2nd July 2009).
Roborugby
Probably Ireland’s premier robot event, well really Ireland’s only robot event Roborugby is to be held on Monday 20th of April 2009 in the Clinton Auditorium in UCD. Starts at 7pm and everyone is welcome. Twenty-one unique autonomous robots, designed by first year engineering students from UCD, will compete against each other in a series of short matches, to determine the winner of RoboRugby. In each match, two robots will compete against each other on the RoboRugby table. The objective for each robot is to move as many balls as possible into the scoring area at the end of the table opposite its starting position, in the time allowed. No intentional ramming of other robots to cause damage is allowed, but being rugby friendly “nudging” to impede opponents is encouraged
As well as the firing of projectiles! which isn’t in its human cousin’s code of conduct
Engineered! A week of wonder
“Engineered! A week of wonder” has been running all week and today is the last day. Plenty of free events have been running all around the country with future engineers building rockets, taking part in K’nex challeneges and load more fun stuff
The objective of the week is to create a positive awareness and spark enthusiasm about the engineering profession to people of all ages. You can visit their site here
It is run by the STEP to Engineering programme who are supported by Discover Science & Engineering, the Department of Education and Science, FÁS and industry.
The programme aims to encourage primary and post-primary students to explore the world of engineering and science and to raise awareness about engineering as a career. STEPS to engineering coordinate an array of programmes throughout the academic year for primary and secondary school students. For more info on steps visit http://www.steps.ie/
