Robot Challenge
Posted by David in Competitions on November 23rd, 2009
Anyone interested in forming an Irish robotics team to compete in the Robot Challenge event to be held in Vienna, Austria 20-21 of March ? A team would probably a consist of 2-4 people depending on their experince. So if you got any electronics, mechanics or programming skills, this could be a fun project.
There are numerous events going on, such as
- Linefollower
- Linefollower Enhanced
- Puck Collect
- Humanoid Sprint
- Freestyle Exhibition
- Sumo
There is a thread in the forum about setting on team for the “Linefollower Enhanced” competition. If anyone is interested in helping out or entering a team in one of the other competitions join the converstion there.
*Notice* Contrary to what is advertised on the Science gallery’s website. There is NO robotics club meeting on this Wednesday. The next meeting will be during December or early January and will be advertised here *Notice*
Schoolbots and Robocode deadlines passed
Posted by David in Competitions on February 19th, 2009
We mentioned the robocode competition before and the deadline for tweaking the code has now passed. The code is set and the virtual robotic tank battles will be played out in the 11th and 12th of March in Tipperary Institute, Thurles, Co. Tipperary Ireland. Good luck to all involved.
We didn’t mention the secondary school equivalent called schoolbots. Eight teams have qualified for the finals and it would seem that all the budding programmers are from outside Dublin. Here are the Finalists:
List of Qualified Schools and Robots for Schoolbots final in March 2009
School - Robot Name
Ursuline Secondary School Thurles - ThePaddyCappers
Loreto Secondary School, Kilkenny – Slonce
CBS Thurles - jrptank2
Gort community school – Alea iacta est…
St Joseph’s CBS Nenagh – bot8
Christian Brothers School Midleton – Master Cheif
Colaiste Dun Iascaigh Cahir – cdi bot7
Abbey CBS Tipperary Town – TheCelt
The final will be held on the 12th of march also in Tipperary Institute. In fact both events are part of Games Fleadh 2009 which is Ireland’s largest computer & console games programming festival.
Robocode 2009 Deadline Soon
Posted by David in Competitions, Events on February 11th, 2009
The closing date for the robocode 2009 enteries is the 15th of Feb, so if you are entering you still got a few more days to tweak the code of your killer robot tank. Best of luck, now it the time to start hitting the coffee!
For those unaware to what robocode is, here is a little run down. RoboCode is a game where teams use Java to program one or more robot tanks to battle in an arena against each other. The little graphical tanks need to be programmed to avoid being hit. They need to be smart enough to move around an arena without any kind of manual control. The virtual contest, which was hosted at Tipperary Institute’s Thurles campus, requires the competitiors (1st year college students from all over Ireland) to out smart the opposition by coding superior artificial intelligence for their virtual robots. The competition itself will be held on the 11th & 12 March.
Great practice for coding real robots and programming in general. Best to luck to everyone involved!
