Upcoming Events: Make Night & Evening of Robots

Loads of great events coming up in February! First off there is a “Make Night” in the Science Gallery on Thursday the 11th of February 6pm to 8pm. This is at slightly different time than mentioned in previous posts (as it clashed with Science Gallery re-opening party).

The idea of a “Make Night” is simple – come along to the Science Gallery and make ANYTHING you like, in the company of other “makers” doing the same. Share ideas, materials and tools. Show off you projects and from learn the experience of others. Drink Italian coffee and talk to friendly creative people. Engineers, artists, jam makers, glue and glitter experts are all welcome. Pick a project, get your materials together and join in the fun. Still not clear? Check out the 5 minute ignite talk about them here.

It’s also going to be an Irish Robotics Club meeting, with testing of the robots we are sending to Robot Challenge 2010 in full swing, so watch out for rogue speedy robots at your feet!

Admission free.

The very next day (12th of February) there will be an “Evening of Robots” being held in collaboration with our friends at TOG. This is on in their space on Arran quay. It’s part of a series of events they are running for Engineering Week, which are open to the public. Well worth checking out!

One more thing,  world of robots on at BT Young Scientist Exhibition at the moment.  Looks like fun!

Sounds cool; think I’ll come along on the 11th. What do I need to bring?

The idea is that people bring the materials they need for a project thats interests them. So the results is people from different backgrounds working on a whole range of projects. I recommend http://www.instructables.com/ for inspiration. Pick something, get materials and print out instructions and come along. The idea is you put some time aside to work on something creative and maybe get ideas or collaborate with others with similar (or different) interests.
I will have some materials and tools people can use (The last time it was drawbots, this time I’m thinking some papercraft), but bringing something you are interested in will make it more enjoyable

Great Ellen, can’t wait to see what you make.

BTW I really liked your recent blog post about eye contact.

Hi David. Loved the presentation. Inspirational and infectious. Have to think of a project. Just a pity I can’t bring along the front room – it’s seriously due a creative makeover! I have two questions. 1. Should we register somehere to attend, and 2. Would it be possible to bring an eight year old? It might just blow his circuitry, but I think he’d learn loads from it.

      Hi Nick,
Thanks, that is very nice of you to say so. A few people have asked me about bringing children. At the moment the answer is yes they are very welcome, once they are kept under adult supervision. I want to be responsible for fun and games, but not the losing an eye part :) I think it would be nice to see adults to working on projects with their kids. I can recommend Make magazine for high quality projects ideas with how to guides, you can order it online or they also sell them on the third floor of hodges & figgis. Craft/hobby shops have kits which can be interesting also. Or something like lego mindstorms (find it in smyths) if you want to turn your kid into an engineer and have some fun yourself.

I can arrange to have the next Make Night in your front room :)

Opps I forgot you don’t have to register anywhere. The fear of not knowing if anyone will show up makes me work harder on organising it. You can join the mailing list on the sidebar ,if you like, for future updates.

    Hi Dave
I will be along. Current plan is to make a guitar effects pedal like this one
    http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-an-easy-guitar-distortion-pedal-STEP-BY-STEP/
and i am bringing the needed parts if anyone wants to make a rubik’s cube for the blind

Thats great David. Those guitar pedals are stupid money to buy, for what they do. You should try make some handy rubber feet for it with free Sugru that will be knocking about.

I’m also liking the rubiks cube also. Very nice idea.

    See you on the 11th
