Hack Night?

Unfortunately looks like we are going to have to cancel the next meeting due to lack of available speakers. It’s a little disappointing, but the show goes on. Next I’m going to run a workshop next to increase the number of robots out there, I’m close to tracking down suppliers for all the parts, so more details soon. I’m also thinking about running a series of “hack nights” which is pretty much a meeting where people can come work on their projects (robotics or otherwise) for a few hours without any formal presentation or guidance. Basically a friendly environment where people can ask each other questions, collaborate if they wish or just show off the projects they have made. Probably to be held in Science Gallery, free of charge. Anyone think “hack nights” a good idea?

Oh and the new post/comment notification system seems to be working again! Hurrah

Hack nights sound good! I find it hard to dedicate time to work on projects, so they might force me to take out the old projects or start on a new one. Also it would be nice to meet some of the people on the site.

I would love to come along to the hack nights! Definitely interested in that, sounds like fun.

    Cool guys, thats the spirit!

I’ll get on to the nice people at the science gallery, see if they can fit us in.

People making stuff makes me happy :)

This sounds like an excellent idea!!
Just out of curiosity are any tools going to be provided to us or do we have to bring everything ?

Tools wise the idea would be that you bring the tools for your own project, but if you are short something someone else might have it and between everyone there would be a wide selection of tools.
That said the Science gallery has some soldering irons, wire cutters etc they might lend us if we ask nicely. I’ll bring and share what I have.

Also I might try to run a simple project for people who want to try making something but don’t have anything in particular in mind (something like drawbots – http://www.metacafe.com/watch/433705/drawbots_simple_drawing_robots/) and provide the materials and tools at cost (say 2-3 euro)

Sorry to hear of the lack of speakers. Hack nights sound cool. It would be a great way to bring robots.ie together and create a real community behind it.

Yeah tdr, I think you are right. I’m going to focus on trying to get people making stuff and meeting up.

Just heard back from the Science gallery. Its going ahead, same time a the meeting was going to be on. 28th of October 6-8pm. I’ll make a new post and start spread the word later today.

    Hi David,
since I have contacted you and subscribed to this group of robotics people I have found a job and had to move to Limerick.
So unfortunatelly now it is quite difficult to take part on yours wednesday’s nights events.
But I want to take part on the hack nights. I am not a good speaker at all, but I am contribute with my good knowledge of C/C++ language, and practical experience with AVR, ARM7 processors. So if anybody would like, I can help with starting with building electronic part of the robot e.g. hardware and programming.
    Jiri
